It’s in Beta

Speaking of Terms of Service, another thing you’re likely to agree with at least a few times a month is a little clause explaining that you’re about to use a product that might not work, because it’s in beta.  In fact, using it might cause disastrous results, which will be entirely your fault for using software/services in beta.

Gmail was in beta for what, 5 or 6 years?  Email is 40 years old!

When did this whole beta thing start, anyway?  I’ve never heard of a car in beta.  Sure there are prototypes, but there aren’t millions of people driving around in beta version Chevys, are there?  The whole beta thing started as a good idea, but now it’s being abused.  Expect to see the beta label on more and more things as companies catch on to the shield it provides from liability.
